Play Review
The play at Yale I think was such a good and interesting performance. I love how there was a comedic presence without the entire play and everyone was able to get a laugh out of it and relate to it. though it was a Shakespearian adaptation, they were able to add the Shakespeare language along with some modern phrases that the youth use, to make it more connectable for the audience, and I think it worked very well. I liked that the cast used a lot of gestures that were also very modernized like the piece sign and different dance moves. I loved the way that the monologues were intimate for the audience, and I feel like they were used to catch us up on the story/ plot of the play and understand the characters inner thoughts.
The staging the beginning started with a futuristic screen that was like an illusion that drew you in from the beginning. the play kept up with this futurist theme when they were using the future glasses to cover their faces, and when they were fighting and they used lightsabers. their also was a character in the play that was driving an electric scooter with a microphone on it I think he was the fool, that gave the play a futuristic vibe as well. lastly another thing I noticed was the autotune on the microphone that was used when one of the characters were singing.
the costuming that the cast wore gave off a very African vibe. the cast was mostly African Americans, which allowed the audience to connect more with the African vibe that the director was trying to give off. the women had braids in the hair and other African styles, and they were dressed in African dresses and gowns, and the men were wearing African clothing as well. the African tribal prints were seen a lot on stage to give off the African vibe. also the music that played I the background was African influenced and added to the African theme.
My favorite character in the play was Sir. Toby who I thought was very entertaining, and fun to watch. the actor was very realistic and the stage movements and language that he used gave the play a very realistic feeling. he also was very funny. I liked the part in the play when he struggled to get on top of the counter or the sword fight with the light savors. I also thought the different jokes that he made added to the the plays humor.
I enjoyed the plot of the play as well, I think it was very thought out the way that they used the different scenes. the kept a lot of the more entertaining scenes that brung more humor instead of the typical Shakespeare scenes. even though they did this the plot was still very obvious.
Something I think I didn't really like as much was the fact that towards the end of the play Olivia just transferred her love from viola to Sebastian so quickly. I think more of an explanation would have been better to explain why it wasn't that big of a deal, but I feel like tha should have been a conflict in the play.
The ending of the play when the stage lit up and the Olivia, viola, Sebastian, and Osorio had a choreographed dance to show their connection and love, was the best part. it was a nice happy ending. viola was able to rekindle a lost relationship, and also bring one together and Olivia was able to be with the man of her dreams. I liked when viola and Osorio walked off and to end the play they had their shadows be the image in the back of them walking into the sunset together.
