the third story is about a three person family. the members in this family are young assad, guy, and lili. this family lives in a one rom shack. young assad which is thier son gets to play dutty boukman. who is a haitan revolutionary and this is a historical role. also guy gets extra work cleaning the bathrooms at the plantation that he works at. guy would dream about stealing the hot air ballon at the plantation, but lili is against that 100% because she knows that that would be the worng thing to do and she doesn't approve she says "if god wanted people to fly, he would have given us wings on our backs." guy chooses to get into the hot air ballon anyway, and lili sees him in the hot air ballon.while in the ballon guy gets the attention of the neighborhood and jumps out. young assad stood over his dead body first checked his pulse then recites the lines from his play. lili looked at his face that she loved as his eyes were "bulging open"in morn, after young assad continued to recite the rest of the lines from the play.
all three of these stories have a similar theme and that is a symbol of death, and refer to flying in some way. for example in the first story the black butterfly resembled death and the white one resembled life, and when the female narrator seen the black butterfly she had known that her male lover had died, the same way in the second story the madonna crying symbolized death and josephines mother knew she was going to die when she told her that one single tear had dropped, also comparing to when young assad seen his father and resighted the play lines, he did that because he knew his father had died. in all these cases there was something that symbolzed the death. Another major symbol was flying. in each story flying was a big theme in the short stories. in the first story the symbol of flying was the love between the female and male narrators, in the second story the symbol was the mother being able to fly, and that "she leaped from dominican soil into the water, and out again on the haitian side of the river. she glowed red when she came out, blood clinging to her skin, which at that moment looked as though it were in flames." And in the third story guy just wanted to fly, so that he could fufill his dreams to make everything better and feel good about himself. he believed that god gave us reasons to want to fly, he further explains that his son, the birds and the sky are reasons to fly. he said "sometimes i just want to take that big ballon and ride it up in the air. id like to sail off somewhere and keep floating until i got to a really nice place with a nice plot of land where i could do something new. i'd build my own house, keep my own garden. just be something new". he explains how he just wants a free life to live with his family and the nature and all things pure, he doesn't want his son to have to work after someone but to be a leader and do great things.
