2. How does the writer give insight on the Haitian culture and people, use an example
The writer gives insight on the Haitian culture and people by giving examples of rituals like for example in nineteen thirty-seven when the narrator had said "when I was five years old, we went on a pilgrimage to the massacre river, which I had expected to be still crimson with blood, but which was as clear as any water that I had ever seen." this is a prime example the Haitian people and what they went through and how they pass along rituals and the story of their culture onto their children and the writer is trying to also pass the experiences of the Haitian people to the reader. the narrator of nineteen thirty- seven was a girl who's mother had crossed the massacre river trying to survive. at the time she was crossing the Dominican boarders into Haiti. by using this story it allowed Edwidge Danticat to get further in depth about the history of Haiti and how the massacre river was a memorial place that may Haitians were killed.
