Play review

The play Les Miserables is written by victor Hugo. I went to see this play on Friday and it is mainly about a man who has been arrested for stealing a loaf of bread. he goes to jail for 9 years i think and does hard time. when he is finally released from jail he gets taken in by a preist who feeds him and gives him shelter. the prist is doing all this good for him but jean decides to steal the silver from the table when the preist is not looking. he gets caught by the officer in charge of the prison, and the prist ends up sticking up for him. he says its okay and to let him go. this then carries into the theme that the writter of the play was trying to show which was acts of kindness.  jean uses stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor meanwhile no one knows about his past as an x convict. Javert wants to bring jean back to prison. years later, jean takes in a child named Cosette after her mother's death, (again to emfasize the acts of kindness that the writter of the play chose to incorperate) but Javert is so relentless that peace is not easy to get. The story continues to go on and infer that the overall theme of the play was that kindness pays off. And through out the play you can see small acts of kindness that were uncalled for.
Lexi played as the lead roll as Jean I think she did a good job portraying him in all his different emotions. There was a scene where she was trying to buy cosette from the inn keepers and I think in the scene she was very persuasive and she was able to project her feelings into the audience. This is sometimes hard to do and I could see with other characters in the play. It is difficult to sing and also tell a story or revel a message. during the play I seen that Lexi was getting caught up in the singing at times, but I really liked how she was able to stay with the music and stay in the right place. another part of the play that I really enjoyed was the part in the play when Lexi was stealing the silver from the table of the priest and ripped up the paper that was from the jail. she used a lot of emotion and power when she was singing and it allowed the audience to understand the feeling of jean in that moment. Lexi made sure to use facial expressions and movements with the singing to make it more dramatic and understanding for the audience. sometimes in musicals it can be hard to follow plot wise  because there is a lot of singing, but she had the right stage presence and movement necessary to help understand the way she felt.
the production made some choices such as using more dull colors on jean, and making him look like he was a little rough around the edges. another thing is that when the play was at a scene where there were a lot of girls doing a prostitute scene, there were lots of colors and flowers and feathers, to symbolize the way that they trying to lear boys in with there charm. or the villagers, for example. for their costumes they all looked poor and their clothing was more dull colors and raggedy to symbolize that the city people had no money. the music that was playing was very interesting. thew music was subject to the character. for example javert had a villainous type of music overtime he was singing, and when Valjean was singing he had a different melody of music. the music was all different when different characters were singing to show the separation of characters. I really enjoyed the lighting the  spotlight would be put on certain characters when they had monologues and it would really put all the focus on them and it would intensify the scene. some characters had foreshadowing scenes in the play. for example javert would come in to the play here and there when things happened to show that he had an important role, which he did towards the end of the play. I think that also showed the difference between the roles as well. some roles were not as important until the end, for example cosette and Marius were not that important in the beginning of the play. they started to become more important after the scene when they were together and they feel in love.
overall I really enjoyed the play I think it was very interesting and even though I was really close to the band that was playing the music I still was able to understand the play and get a good grasp of what the play was all about. I already had a clear understanding of les miserables and so understanding the play with the staging, singing, props, music, and, and characters was also helpful to really get a better understanding of what the hidden messages were in the play.
