Proposal
For the interpretation of the glass menagerie we decided to focus on the ending scene of the play which is the part when Jim and Amanda have a conversation about how he has a spouse, and can not come back to see the family. This scene then goes into the a scene between tom and Amanda that leads to tom leaving because he cannot take the judgement from his mother. The character that I am playing will be Amanda. Who is a over the top, rambunctious character, who can be sort of annoying at times. Her emotions and feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety from her husband leaving her rubs off on her children a lot in the play. For me playing her character I will have to be loud and very outgoing. She is a vocal character that is not shy to say her opinion and is very unsympathetic. I think this will be a little bit of a challenged for me because I am not that outgoing as a person so I will have to be very loud and high pitched to play her character. I will have to focus on nagging and complaining so that the characters Jim, and tom in the play can see how pathetic of a character I am and how needy I am for a better life. This scene is important for the play because it is the point of the play where Jim breaks the ice to Amanda and makes her lose all her hope for a better life or some type of escape from the lifestyle that she is living. Also this scene is the point where tom has finally had enough and doesn't want to deal with his mother and the constant pressure of being the only source for the house. Also he is tired of putting up with the constant criticism and judgement. Tom leaves in the scene and he moves on to another life. I think Amanda's character is very important in this scene because she is the main character that is upset and has the most depressing news. One thing she has to go through is the fact that her daughters only crush is engaged to be married and her son just left the house with no intent of coming back. She has to now figure out what she will do for her daughter and for herself and their living conditions because she has no one but herself and her daughter to attend to and look to for any kind of help. Also in this scene you can see the disappointment from Amanda. She was let down by Tom in her opinion because she felt like her son was supposed to be their for her no matter what and he should have known better then to bring a married man into the house when in her head she thought tom knew her intention. Which was to bring someone home for Laura. When I play this scene I am going to focus on the anger and disappointment that Amanda has and her strong feelings and emotions overtaking how she should have really reacted.
