adaptation review

n class we watched a adaptation of the glass menagraie. this adaptation was set in the same time period as the book and you can tell by the clothing that the characters were wearing and also the way that the house was set up ( candles, plates, furniture). in the start of the play the director decided to not have tom  talk for the opening monologue but instead sit in the street which appeared to be wet and dark and the voice of tom though was playing in the  back. i think the director decided to have this dim lighting and cold wet setting because he wanted to portray the depression and the sadness that tom was feeling and also to foreshadow that the ending will still be sad and depressing.  the opening scene started off with tom, laura, and amanda at the table and right away amanda goes on and on talking about gentlemen callers, lauras typing school, the fact that her old husband left her, and the old days when she got a lot of gentlemen callers. this is significant because in the book the author makes it so that amanda comes off very impulsive and in the play amanda was very outragious and kind of annoying. her character in the play was fit perfectly for her role. you can tell she really gets on toms nerves and living with her is not easy. when he comments on the way tom is eating in the first scene you can tell her gets very frustrated and also you can also see the way she trys to control everyone in the house. for example when laura trys to et her coffee he also tells her to sit back down and stay fresh for gentlemen callers. which is kind of pathetic because men never jut come by there home to look upon laura or herself, but she has soo much hope that one will come that laura cant even get the coffee. this time when tom and laura argue tom simply goes out to smoke on the balcony and wishes to be in a better situation. amanda is so desperate to find a man that can take care of the family that she asks tom to find someone that could potentially fit for his position. Tom finds jim whom he is good friends with at the wearhouse were he works and he invites him over for dinner. he tells his mother that he didnt tell jim his mothers expectations. in the movie before jim arrives to the house for dinner amanda puts laura in one of her old dresses that are really glamourous to try and impress jim. then she goes and puts on an old one of her dresses as well to make it seem like they are high end and classy. but really they dont look like that at all. the dresses are out of date and they are too over the top for a dinner at their home. once jim arrives laura goes and gets the door for him and her brother. when she opens the door he doesnt speak or smile he trys to hide herself behind the door and look as if she is unnoticeable. she gets extremely nervous just seeng jim in person, and when he says hi to her she doesnt respond. during this same scene tom tells jim about his plans of leaving house. he also informs jim that his mother doesnt know of his plans. in the movie after tim, amanda, and jim have dinner tim leaves with amanda into the other room and the lights go off. this signifies that tim doesnt pay the light bill and so jim uses a candle as liht when he goes to speak with laura who is on the day bed. when jim goes to speak to laura she at first is very shy and doesnt speak as much. then when they bring up highschool, laura tells jim all the memories that she had of the school and of him, which makes her come off a little weird, but jim doesnt mind it. laura then mentioned that he callled her blue roses and he remembers who she is completely. after that laura goes and gets the yearbook that was from highschool and they start to remember things that happened in it like the play that jim was in and laura still had the flyer from that night. the flyer laura asked jim to sign it and he did. when they start to converse even more laura starts to open up to him and starts to feel more comfortable. they share a dance together. they started dancing off of the music that was playing in the dance hall downstairs. jim opens the door to hear the music more and asks laura to dance. the dance was sweet and simple. more to have fun. jim accidently drops one of lauras glass menagarie. it actually was her favorite one. laura picked up the glass piece in a stunned way but then she doesnt really care and she says its okay. this is probably because she was so into the moment and she was having a good time with him that she couldnt get mad or upset. jim pulls laura closer and tells her that someone needed to kiss her and give her hope, and so he leans in ans kisses laura.  the kiss seemed very compassionate and almost lovely. untill jim stops and explains that he should have never kissed her. laura seemed very startled and confused and so he broke the news to her that he was with another women and was going to marry her. this news hurt laura in a sense because she really cared about jim and he gave her that sense of hope. amanda walks out from the other room and asks whats the hurry for jims diparture, and he breaks the news to amanda that he has a soon to be wife. this hurt amanda because all of her hope was gone. jim explains that he wont call, or probably ever come back again. once he leaves tom comes back in. he is very unaware of what has happened. he doesnt understand that jim had a fiance. so amanda blames him for their humiliation, and tom looks at laura in regret. he could tell that she is truely upet and hurt by the facial expression on her face. he try's to explain that he had no idea, but amanda doesnt take that. tom gets frustrated and demands to go to the movies. amanda then asks tom why the movies? you always go to the movies. this gets tom so upset and amanda just tells him to leave and says leave if you want to we dont need you here anyway. after he leaves blues music starts to play in the background. from the dance hall i presume. laura and amanda walk out ont the fire escape and look at the moon. amanda tells laura that back in blue mountain she would make wishes on the moon when there was a full moon. and so she tells laura to make a wish, and to wish for happiness and good fortune. the film then goes back to the beginning when tom is sitting in the street on some steps but this time he gets up and walks down a couple of ally's in st. luis and he sees flashbacks, and images of his sister and mother as he says his ending monologue.
