Reflection on adaptation
Baz Hurmanns adaptation to romeo and juliet was a more modernized version of the old school play with a little of the shakespearean feel. the director decided to use more of the old fashioned costumes and props. for example the party scene in the play was more of a older themed party and the house of capulet was designed in a older fashion. i think the director wanted to keep the feel of an older play but still have it be relatable to the newer age group. the director wanted to step away from the traditional 19th century culture and more towards the way he would have presented the story originally. the director was all about gasping the story critically and allowing the audience to take from the film. for example, adding in the guns instead of swords was a way that the director showed the same type of connection with the play romeo and juliet versus the more modern times. Another thing the director wanted the audience to interpret was the way the the capulet boys were dressed. He used the costuming of tybalt and the rest of the capulet males t show more of a latin gang vibe. This makes the audience look at the capulets as more dangerous and willing to fight and get into trouble. The way that shakespeare portrayed romance between romeo and juliet in the play, was a fast and easy love. He wanted to show how strong their love was for one another and the way that doing this too quick would get you. The way baz used romeo and the way he portrayed leonardo dicaprio was the exact same way. He used him to be an immature selflessness young teen who was struck with love and unable to obtain any other responsibilities besides worrying about her. Romeo's character was almost comedic when it came to the way that he was always in a rush to do everything, and he felt like he was in a hurry to get married, see the friar, go see juliet at her balcony, leave from mancheria and go to see juliet in her chamber, and the list goes on. The director wanted to show what shakespeare also showed in his play. Baz Humans was all for following the way shakespeare did things. In the movie there was many times in the story where modern music was played and modern singing as well. Shakespeare influenced the director's decision on using modern music in the play. Shakespeare would often incorporate modern music of that ara in his plays to enhance the play and also to use to advance the play to the next scene. It would further engage the audience and that's what the motive was. The director did a good job at using the more modern pop music in the right way and not allowing it to take away from the overall view and concept of the story. This is so because the director decided to chose music that would better fit the scene that was taking place instead of just adding music carelessly. For example, when the director used the same music when romeo and juliet meet for the first time and when they died. He did that to show the connection they had and how romeo was having that same connection when he seen her in her deathbed. By playing the same music it gave the audience a connection as well. It makes the audience remember the time they first meet and it connects the emotion in both scenes.
