notes on elinor fuchs article

This article is saying that a play is not a basic piece of literature that is complicated and is built upon by language alone, but it is a work of art that carries more meaning and thought. You are able to physically experience the emotion of a play and you are able to understand its dynamic even if you don't understand the language. It also said that plays are designed for the audience to try to understand the overall language of the play not necessarily the setting or the characters, but more of the concept; but the director can also make it relatable for the audience to understand. For example, with romeo and juliet there can be many modern adaptations to the play that have more modern music, clothing, and setting but the overall idea of the play is what the focus should be. Plays don't have to follow any type of protocol or rules. You can compare plays to the planets and earth. The same way the planet has a climate, mood, tone, time etc. so does plays. They get changes and formed into their own world.  Also on earth their are people, and when you chose the rules of the people in your play “planet” you have to decide what traits or motives you're going to give the characters “people”. As a director they have to also choose the staging. Where are certain scenes going to be, what are they going to look like, what is the feel that they are going to give off, and how are the characters going to react to them. You have to decide what you are going to change and what is more important to change in the story and the landscape to change the language. the characters in plays also have to fit the pattern of the play and they can't throw the play off.
